Super Carers graffiti work

A graffiti artwork by 30 young carers from New Parks and Beaumont Leys has gone on display at the Beaumont Shopping Centre.

The piece, entitled Super Carers, was commissioned by the centre to raise awareness of the invaluable work young carers do. All the young artists involved in the project, run by Soft Touch Arts, are between 12 and 18 and support either a parent or a sibling with an illness or disability.

They attend either the New Parks or Stocking Farm groups run by CareFree. The artists chose the theme of Super Carers to convey the great sense of pride they have in what they cope with every day but wanted onlookers to understand that these responsibilities make their lives tough.

Super Carers will be on display at the Fletcher Mall centre until Sunday.

Sarah Duffin, centre manager, said:

“When I visited the CareFree groups I was struck by the children’s artistic talent.
We wanted to give them the opportunity to work as a group on a larger scale art project that would tell their story. These young people are the hidden heroes of our community.”
